Updated Disciplinary Policy for High School
Posted on 05.16.10 by Mychael
The following update has been approved by The Academy School Board on April 12, 2010, and takes effect in the 2010-2011 school year. Changes noted in red.
Discipline Steps Toward Suspension or Expulsion
Movement onto Step 1 below and from one step to the next occurs either with the third detention or because of very serious behaviors calling for immediate intervention and discipline. The counting of the detentions starts over after a student has gone five (5) weeks without a detention.
Step 1 -
The student serves one day suspension. Following this suspension, a conference is held with the student, teachers, parents or guardians, and the principal. The parents or guardians are made aware of the procedures that will follow if the problem continues. The step is recorded in the student’s file.
Step 2 -
The student serves a two-day suspension. Following the suspension, a conference to discuss the matter is held. The parents or guardians and student are counseled that the next step (3) will place the student only one step from expulsion. The action is recorded in the student’s file.
Step 3 -
A conference is held with the student, teachers, parents or guardians, principal, and administrator. The student is suspended for three days and the parents or guardians are informed that the next step (4) is expulsion. This action is recorded in the student’s file.
Step 4 -
The parents or guardians are notified that the student has been expelled. The School Board is informed, and the action is recorded in the student’s file.
At Step 3, the parents or guardians may appeal to the School Board at the next scheduled meeting for a review. The appeal must be submitted at least five school days before the next school board meeting.

According to the Missing Children Records Act, parents are required to supply Calvary Academy with an official copy of each student’s birth certificate. Please have the certificate in the Academy office by March 31st. While the State has not previously informed us of this requirement, they have now done so and asked us to comply as quickly as possible with this Act. As stated in this Federal Act, the Administration is directed to report all families that are not in compliance.
I am sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you. Thank you for attending to this issue promptly.

Bullying
Posted on 09.30.09 by Mychael
At Calvary Academy we want every individual to be able to live in a safe environment. As Christians, we should strive even more for this as we are not to “conform to this world but be transformed.” The basis for behavior should be according to God’s Word. As Calvary is taking a proactive stance against bullying, information and resources will be provided throughout the year to help facilitate positive discussions both at home and school to strengthen our partnership. Included is a form to empower parents to report bullying.
If you suspect that your child is being bullied, please complete a Bully Report form, which can be found in the Academic Resources under the Other section and return it either to your child’s teacher or to the Academy office. This form will also be available in the Academy office.
Here are a few steps that we have taken at Calvary Academy to keep our school bully free. Please let us know if you have any suggestions.
We have incorporated a faith-based supplement to the Bible curriculum with an emphasis on avoiding bullying.
The topics in chapels are designed to challenge the students in areas of appropriate character development.
A form is available for all Academy teachers to complete and track any report or indication of alleged bullying.
A form is available in the Academy office or on our website for all parents and/or students to complete and report alleged bullying.
The following material is from http://www.stopbullyingnow.hrsa.gov .
What is Bullying?
Bullying among children is aggressive behavior that is intentional and that involves an imbalance of power or strength. A child who is being bullied has a hard time defending himself or herself. Usually, bullying is repeated over time. Bullying can take many forms such as: hitting or punching (physical bullying); teasing or name-calling (verbal bullying); intimidation through gestures or social exclusion (nonverbal bullying or emotional bullying); and sending insulting messages by phone or computer email (cyber bullying).
What to do if your child is being bullied?
Focus on your child. Be supportive and gather information about the bullying.
Listen carefully to what your child tells you about the bullying. Ask him/her to describe who was involved and how and where each bullying episode happened.
Learn as much as you can about the bullying tactics being used, when, and where the bullying happened. Can your child name other children or adults who may have witnessed the bullying?
Check your emotions. A parent’s protective instincts stir strong emotions. Although it is difficult, a parent is wise to step back and consider the next steps carefully.
Contact your child’s teacher and/or principal
Give factual information about your child’s experience of being bullied – who, what, when, where, and how.
Talk regularly with your child and with school staff to see if the bullying has stopped. If the bullying persists, contact school authorities again.
Questions to Ask Your Child about Bullying
Did the child hurt you on purpose?
Was it done more than once?
How do you feel about the behavior?
Did the child know you were being hurt?

Bullying on TV
Posted on 09.22.09 by Mychael
The following is an excerpt from the bullying curriculum published by World Teacher Press that our 7-9 grade students are using in the classroom.
What effect does bullying on television have on us? An association between violence on television and aggression has been well established over the last few decades. There is a need for students to develop critical viewing skills to decrease the negative effects of media violence and bullying on them. In developing these skills they learn to distance themselves from the dramatization and to recognize and understand the differences between television and real life.
We are asking for students and parents to identify bullying behaviors in programs they watch regularly. You may also begin to identify and become aware of situations involving racism, violence, negative stereotypes and sexism. You both may notice a change in your reactions to the incidents once a focus has been placed on the inappropriate behavior. What does television tell students about bullying? What role does television play in either condoning or criticizing the behavior?
Discussion Points
1. Discuss the headings on the “Bullying on Television” survey sheet that is included with this newsletter so your child is aware of what is expected. (Keywords and phrases can be used.)
2. Children and/or parents should keep a tally of incidents at the bottom of the page and describe examples on the chart.
3. Children may need to watch the same program over time to list examples accurately.
4. Discuss the results. Ask your child if they feel differently about the program after doing this exercise.
Discuss the following:
Were any of the behaviors funny? If so, why?
Did anyone not think they were funny? Why not?
Is it possible for a sitcom or a cartoon to be funny without put-downs, etc? How?
Can your child think of a time where they have been put-down, teased, or bullied? How did they feel?
Was it funny? Why or why not?
Is this behavior condoned? If so, how?
Is it criticized? How?
What is the program telling us about bullying?
Did you know that the most common form of verbal bullying is name-calling?
New Grading Scale
Posted on 08.05.09 by Mychael
The Calvary Academy School Board has approved changes to the grading scale and the method for calculating GPA at Calvary Academy. College and universities review students’ letter grades and GPAs when evalutating applications for admission and awarding competitive academic scholarships. However, Calvary Academy has not used the the same grading scale as is now used by most schools. For example, a student with a 92 in geometry would receive an “A” where a student at Calvary Academy would receive a “B”.
The School Board further voted to make the new grading scale retroactive for any student currently in high school. This means that students who are currently in Calvary Academy will have their grades and GPAs recalculated for their entire high school career. This only applies to grades and that were earned at Calvary Academy, not those that transfer students received from their previous schools.
New Grading Scale - Regular - Honors
100-99 (A+) - 4.25 - 5.25
98-92 (A) - 4.00 - 5.00
91-90 (A-) - 3.75 - 4.75
89-88 (B+) - 3.25 - 4.25
87-82 (B) - 3.00 - 4.00
81-80 (B-) - 2.75 - 3.75
79-78 (C+) - 2.25 - 3.25
77-72 (C) - 2.00 - 3.00
71-70 (C-) - 1.75 - 2.75
69-68 (D+) - 1.25 - 2.25
67-62 (D) - 1.00 - 2.00
61-60 (D-) - 0.75 - 1.75
59-0 (F) - 0.00 - 0.00
